由造礁珊瑚和造礁藻类形成的珊瑚礁以及丰富多样的礁栖动物和植物共同组成的集合体。它们的种类丰富、形态多样、生命活动旺盛，是其他海洋生物群落无法与之相比的热带浅海特有的生物群落叫珊瑚礁生物群落。珊瑚礁生物群落对环境条件要求相当严格，其主要成员造礁珊瑚，需要较高的水温，在年平均水温约为23～27°C的水域生长最为旺盛；在低于18°C的水域，只能生活，而不能成礁。因此珊瑚礁生物群落通常分布在低纬度的热带及其邻近海域。此外，有强大暖流经过的海域，如中国东北的钓鱼岛和日本的琉球群岛,虽纬度较高,也有珊瑚礁生物群落。与此相反，在属于热带的非洲和南美洲西岸海域，由于存在低温的上升流，则有珊瑚礁及其生物群落的分布。
