　　　　卡林以犀利、尖锐的语言而著称。20世纪70年代，他创作了很多幽默的作品来讽刺当时美国对污秽词语的“歧视”。卡林也由此树立了“反正统”的形象。他在1972年发行的音乐专辑的独白中列出了“永远别在电视上说的七个字”，而后又在后来的专辑中推出了同系列类似主题的“污秽语”(Filthy Words)，并被Pacifica Foundation电台播放，由此引发了是否应在电台等公共媒体中播放带有污秽词语的争论，经过多次上诉，1978年美国最高法院判决，卡林作品中的一些用词不当，政府有权在认为其作品可能被儿童收听时禁止播放。卡林的喜剧敏感往往会反映同一个主题，认为人性不可教化。 “我没有任何信仰和崇拜。我不相信这个国家，不相信宗教和上帝，我不相信所有人造的程式化的思想”。这是卡林在2001年接受英国媒体采访时说的一段话。卡林生平出过22张喜剧和朗诵专辑以及3本畅销图书，曾获格莱美奖，他的身影和声音经常出现在众多影视作品中。前不久，美国华盛顿肯尼迪表演艺术中心刚刚宣布第11届马克·吐温美国幽默奖授予乔治·卡林，以表彰他50年来作为独角喜剧演员、作家和演员的杰出成就。肯尼迪表演艺术中心董事会主席施瓦茨曼说，卡林不仅引人发笑，而且让人思考。
