　　现任副总统突然去世，民主党参议员莱恩·汉森被总统提名为最佳候选人，如果当选的话，她将成为美国历史上第一位女性副总统。但激进的政治倾向使汉森受到了来自于华盛顿各个方面特别是保守派们的攻击，其中包括实力强大的老政客谢利·兰庸。兰庸为人狡猾奸诈、口是心非，再加上在政界混迹多年，更是老谋深算、为达目的不择手段。
　　就在为讨论汉森的提名而举行的听证会上，他别有用心地将汉森大学时代的历史翻出来，指责她曾经参与过性交易。这一指责立即掀起了一阵轩然大波，导致听证会变成了辩论场。看来，摆在汉森面前的问题不仅仅是能否当选副总统了，她的整个政治前途和政治生命甚至连她的个人生活都可能因此而毁之于一旦。莱恩·汉森只有背水一战了……
